Spring Choral Concert: Song, Land, and Experience

Thursday, April 13, 2023 7:30pm

Join us for a choral concert exploring topics of land and diaspora, dispersal and memory, nuancing notions of east and west, identity and folk song through works by Komitas Vardapet, Claude Debussy, Samih Choukeir, Mari Ésabel Valverde, Kathleen Allan, and Javier Busto. Featuring Reed College's Chorus, Treble Voices Ensemble and Collegium Musicum, pianist Rebecca Stager, guitarist Sal Wallin ('25), and conductor Shohei Kobayashi.

Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Masks are not required at event. Space will be limited, seating is first-come, first-serve.

This concert includes the culmination of a year-long project to create new performance editions of selected choral works by Armenian priest, composer, and ethnomusicologist Komitas Vardapet (1869–1935). While Komitas’s complete works are collected, published, and available in the public domain, few choral scores with transliterated texts are available for non-Armenian readers and speakers. Following this term, our new scores of the five choral works by Komitas Vardapet featured on this program will be made available online for a wider audience of choral musicians to access.
