Freshman Malia Heien won the women's 800m and freshmen Jonathan Fritz and Nick Stade combined for five top-finishes on the men's side to lead Lewis & Clark track & field at the Pacific University Multis.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN'S
Heien and sophomore Olivia Farrar started and ended the day in the same spot in the standings but took very different routes to get there.
The heptathlon resumed on Friday with the long jump. Heien took 10th place in the event with a leap of 4.82m (15-09.75 feet). Farrar came in 13th when she jumped 4.62m (15-02 feet).
Farrar led the Pioneers duo in the javelin throw. Farrar finished in a tie for 15th in the javelin with a throw of 21.81m (71-06 feet). Heien came in 19th in the event with a heave of 20.24m (66-05 feet).
Heien closed out the seven events with a first-place showing in the 800m. She finished almost eight seconds ahead of the rest of the field with a time of 2:18.22. Farrar joined Heien in the top-10 when she crossed the line in 2:40.79 to take ninth place.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN'S
Fritz and Stade entered Day 2 in fifth and eighth place and both made up ground on the leaders from Division II Western Oregon University.
The decathlon started the day with the 110m hurdles. Fritz kicked off the day with a fourth-place finish (15.97). Stade came in seventh overall when he came across in 16.58.
Fritz made it back-to-back fourth-place showings in the discus throw. He launched the discus 27.89m (91-06 feet). Stade placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 24.56m (80-07 feet).
Stade led the way in the pole vault. He tied for fifth overall when he cleared 3.75m (12-03.50 feet). Fritz posted a top jump of 3.15m (10-04 feet) to take ninth place.
Fritz made it three top-five finishes in four events to start the day when he finished fifth in the javelin throw. Fritz tossed the javelin 39.40m (129-03 feet) to place fifth. Stade came in 12th in the javelin with a throw of 28.78m (94-05 feet).
Stade tied for his best finish in any event of the decathlon in the 1,500m run. He crossed the line in 5:03.30 to place third. Fritz came across in 5:41.76 to place 12th.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Heien's 3,968 points put her in fifth place in program history in the heptathlon. Farrar sits 17th in program history in the event. Heien was just 32 points away from becoming the fourth Pioneer in program history to reach 4,000 points in the event.
- Fritz and Stade rank ninth and 10th in program history in the decathlon. Fritz (5,508 points) and Stade (5,408 points) posted the most points by a Pioneer since 2017 when Noah Avery (6,381 points) and David Lovitz (5,588) each posted top-eight marks in program history.
- Heien and Farrar both sit in the top-11 in Division III. Heien currently is in fifth and Farrar is ranked 11th.
- Fritz and Stade are in fifth and sixth in Division III this year in the decathlon.
- Heien set a collegiate PR in all seven events in the heptathlon.
- Fritz competed in the 110m hurdles and 1,500m run for the first time collegiately. He also competed in the pole vault in outdoor track for the first time.
- Farrar set collegiate PRs in the javelin (1.10m) and 800m (first time running outdoors) on Friday.
- Stade competed in the 110m hurdles and 1,500m run for the first time on Friday.
The entire track & field team will travel to Pacific University on Saturday for the Pacific University Open.
